Employees Want Recognition
If you want to keep benefiting from positive outcomes your team members create for your business, you need to provide employee recognition. Employee recognition isn’t just a nice thing to do; it is the right thing to do for your employees who help make your organization a success. Many surveys have been done asking employees what they would like to see more of at their own companies and the overwhelming response has been RECOGNITION!
Setting up an effective recognition strategy within your organization is easy and we have some simple tips to help you get on your way!
- Be Knowledgeable – Ask yourself what is important to recognize and who will I recognize, individual or team? When and where will I provide this recognition and what principles or values does this recognition support?
- Involve the Team – It is important to ask your employees for their ideas on recognition, what type of recognition they have received in the past and what they have liked and what they didn’t. Your employees will appreciate that you involved them and value their opinions.
- Mark it on the Calendar – This may sound tedious but when you are busy it is easy to forget. Put it in your calendar just as a reminder; maybe weekly or bi-weekly. You should also keep track of your recognition; who have you recognized, when, why and how did they respond to the recognition.
- Be Excited – Communicate the importance of recognition with positive energy and every time you deliver recognition keep that same positive energy.
- Be Timely – To ensure that your recognition is effective you need to recognize employees as close as possible to the behavior or outcome you are reinforcing.
- Set Your Team up for Success – It is important to know your employees strengths and weakness, so that you can assign projects accordingly. Put employees in roles that will energize and strengthen their abilities.
Remember that although nothing may beat a sincere “Thank You” from the Boss, there are many ways and many tools to show recognition. You can use greeting cards, start a company newsletter with success stories, reward employees formally with plaques or set up learning opportunities. Think outside the box and remember to have fun with it. For more ideas on employee recognition click here!
