Motivate Employees with Information & Involvement
A number of motivational studies have shown that employees typically place a high value on receiving information about their job, their performance, and how the organization is doing. This kind of information helps employees on both an emotional and practical level. Feeling “in” on things or feeling part of a team helps employees to better perform their responsibilities. Information that is communicated in a personal and timely manner is highly valued. According to a Gallup survey, 61 percent of respondents agreed that having input in company decisions was more important than a share in ownership.
Here are some ideas to help you share information with your employees and support involvement:
- A healthcare group created a monthly “thought-a-day” calendar of information related to their hospital and its programs, with entries such as: “Did you know that over $2 million was paid in employee benefits in 2002?” In their internal communications, the organization, uses a “hand” icon next to any idea that initially stemmed from an employee suggestion, signifying “You had a hand”
- A transportation company started publishing newsletters and hands out four hour cassette tapes with industry and company news, information on benefits, and personalized messages such as birthday announcements to their drivers to help improve the morale for these employees who are often off-site.
- At an automobile company one of the most popular column in their newsletter is about their companies competition. Employees requested information about new models the company was planning to market, which helped them serve as ambassadors.
